On the morning the Je Khenpo leaves Tashichhodzong in Thimphu for his winter home at Punakha Monastery, there is a long procession which marks the beginning of this annual journey.

Tashichhodzong: The “fortress of the glorious religion” was initially erected in 1641 and rebuilt in the 1960s. Tashichhodzong houses some ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body.

Government officials line the beginning of the route. The men in traditional dress are also wearing a sash called a kabney, the colors indicate rank and seniority.

His Holiness the Je Khenpo
Buddhism plays a vital role in Bhutan and the Je Khenpo is the most senior religious figure and head monastic preceptor. He is of equal rank to the King.

The monks are carrying all the important relics from the monastery in Thimphu which will travel with them to Punakha Dzong.

People lining the roadside
During the whole two-day journey, which is normally a 2 1/2 hour drive, there are people lining every roadside to greet the Je Khenpo and receive blessings.
